Tokenomics overview
Token Economics, or Tokenomics, is the emerging practice of managing the production, consumption, and monetization of token-based AI to generate business outcomes. It answers one question across the entire AI lifecycle: Is AI driving value?
How to Start
- What is Tokenomics: Learn the working definition and the emerging challenges of AI billing and its economics.
- Production, Consumption, Value: Understand the supply chain of a token.
- Key Players: Get to know the types of token consumers and suppliers building the specification.
What Is Tokenomics?
Tokenomics is the discipline of converting energy and capital into AI tokens, consuming those tokens efficiently to enable intelligence, and turning that intelligence into value. It looks across all AI spend, and not just the tokens themselves. However, tokens are currently the most visible and easily-metered part, which is why “AI cost” and “token cost” often get used interchangeably.
The discipline is still emerging and continues to take shape with participation from token consumers and suppliers across the world.
Key Players and Roles
The Tokenomics Foundation brings the largest consumers of token-based AI together with the suppliers that serve them: hardware providers, frontier model providers, neoclouds, hyperscalers, inference companies, and platform and consulting companies. Together they build vendor-neutral specifications and shared language across token production, consumption, and monetization.
Production, Consumption, Value
Three questions outline the supply chain of a token and identify its main stages: Production, Consumption, and Value.
| Question | Stage | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| How is the token made? | Production | Turning energy and capital into usable tokens; token factory effectiveness, measured as cost per token. |
| How is the AI used? | Consumption | Allocation, forecasting, and optimization; model routing, model selection, prompt engineering, quantization, and caching. |
| What did the AI return? | Value | The boardroom question: monetizing intelligence, re-pricing products, and maximizing useful output per token. |
The three stages are linked. The price of the tokens you make meets the efficiency of how you spend them, and that sets your margins. Change one and it cascades through the others, sometimes all the way to the price your customers pay.

How Tokenomics Relates to FinOps
The Tokenomics Foundation builds alongside the FinOps Foundation, both projects of the Linux Foundation. FinOps is a cultural practice and framework for maximizing the business value of technology, and it continues unchanged. Tokenomics takes on the open questions specific to token-based AI, especially the production and monetization questions that sit outside traditional technology value management.
NOTE: FinOps optimizes the infrastructure, and Tokenomics optimizes the outcome of each token across its full life. Both align to the FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS), the unifying language that gives token and technology spend common ground.
